Any woman who has struggled with fitting into society’s ideal of beauty, or struggled with her self-worth, will easily connect with Susan L. Tuttle’s main character, Penny Thornton. Penny is smart, determined, kind, and thoughtful but cannot see past her scars, extra pounds, and the false knowledge that somehow she will never measure up to anyone’s idea of beauty.
At First Glance delicately tackles the emotional baggage many of us carry regarding our appearance. Jonah Black’s character encourages us to push past the surface and really see the person. Readers may be tempted to pair Penny with her sexy personal trainer, East Fischer, but it’s really bald, soft in the middle, Jonah who exhibits unconditional love, even while being relegated to the friend zone.
Will Penny choose the package with all the pretty trimmings, or will she select what lies behind door number two? Will she reconcile with her judgmental mother and self-centered little sister? The ending may surprise you.
