Roots of Wood and Stone introduces readers to quirky historian Sloane Kelley, investment banker Garrett Anderson, and takes them on a journey artfully woven between past and present.
No one would guess the outcome of the fateful day Garrett shows up at the museum where Sloane works with a bag full of “treasures” from his grandmother’s house. The diaries inside unexpectedly hold keys that eventually unlock family secrets.
Readers may find themselves not only curious about how Garrett and Sloane’s stories unfold but also intrigued with the underlying story contained in Annabelle Collins’ diaries. Each new diary unwraps a new piece of history.
However, while Amanda Wen’s book is an interesting read, felt a bit too nicely packaged in some places and left several important plot developments unanswered.
Readers may walk away wondering who, how, and why.
